Let's support the Philippines' rich legacy of hand-crafted products. Each piece is unique. No two masks are identical even if they are cut from the same weave. It takes many days or over a week to weave the fabric, often using a backstrap loom. So our makers ensure they maximize every inch of the precious weaves and minimize waste.
*Please note that there may be some variations with the patterns in the masks even though they’re cut from the same fabric as our makers try to minimise waste of these previous indigenous weaves.
CULTURAL MEANING:
Mountain Province is the landlocked part of the Cordillera region, well known for its rugged mountains and steep cliffs. It is the home of the hanging coffins and mummy caves (old way of naturally preserving bodies).
Weaving is part of the culture of people of Cordilleras. It is used in their traditional wear and in age old rituals like weddings and burials. Therefore, there are many meanings attached to the colours and motifs used. It is common to see icons such as Vs, diamonds and zigzag in their hand woven designs.
The meaning behind these symbols varies from places and ethno-linguistic groups, but in Mountain Province, they say that the diamonds represent the rice grains and the Vs are the mortar and pestle used in milling during the ancient times. Wearing these symbols can represent abundance and wealth.
